What We Are Reading

We have had a pleasant month of reading some very enjoyable fiction. The kids never tire of listening and they love to sit and have a snack and listen to a book on a hot summer afternoon. We have enjoyed quite a few books this past month - some old favorites and some new ones. We finished More All-Of-A-Kind-Family and we really liked this book. I'm not sure why we have never read it before but it was very enjoyable. We then read Life With Lily by Mary Ann Kinsinger and Suzanne Woods Fisher. It was about a young Amish girl that lived on a farm in upstate New York and was the first book of the series. We all liked it and though I thought it was a little slow paced the kids did not seem to care as they said it was one of their favorites this month. 

We also read Mandy by Julie Edwards for probably the fifth or sixth time but it never seems to get old for the kids. They love it every single time we read it and if they love it that much why not read it again and again. We also read Fair Bay by Eleanor Frances Lattimore for probably the sixth or seventh time and it is also a favorite. This was also a favorite of one of my older girls when she was young. I even looked for it to give it to her for Christmas this past year and could not find a copy of it anywhere. I found my copy years ago and it is dear to us. 

We read By The Shores of Silver Lake by Laura Ingalls Wilder. We have read almost all of the series this past year and liked all of them. I think the only one we have not read is The Long Winter and maybe we will read it in the fall. 

We have now started A New Home For Lily by Mary Ann Kinsinger and Suzanne Woods Fisher which is the second book of the series. So far the kids like this book as much as the first one. We also started The Secret at Pheasant Cottage by Patricia St. John which I am only reading to two of the kids and so far we like it. It is about a girl named Lucy that has always lived with her grandparents in a cottage in England. Her mother died when she was a baby, but Lucy has no idea whatever happened to her father and nobody will tell her. She is determined to find her father. This is about all we know at this point of the book, but so far it has been enjoyable. 

We did read a few more books but these are the highlights. We are having a good time this summer reading first thing in the morning and then again around lunch time and then occasionally in the evening before bed if we are not running late. Thanks for all of the book ideas I have received - we are always looking for good books. 

A picture from the 4th of July - it rained and the kids had to watch the fireworks from the porch. It was the messiest 4th I remember in a long time and the smallest one we have had in a long time. But, it was still fun.
